That was entertaining.
Two South American powers went blow-for-blow in a World Cup quarterfinal at the Estadio Castelao, but Brazil's guile from set pieces proved the difference as the hosts knocked off Colombia 2-1 on goals by defenders Thiago Silva and David Luiz to advance to a semifinal date against Germany on July 8.Read More
(July 4, 2014) – Vicky Losada and Carli Lloyd square off against Tiffany McCarty and Meghan Klingenberg when the Western New York Flash face the Houston Dash on Saturday.
Losada continued her strong start to her NWSL career with her third goal of the season in Western New York’s 2-1 home loss to Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday.
The Spain international’s goal in the 33rd minute after defender Brittany Taylor played a long ball into the box on a restart. Seattle midfielder Keelin Winters was first to the ball, but her header fell to Losada – whose shot lashed against the underside of the crossbar before coming down just over the goal line.
Losada – the NWSL assist leader with six – has registered a goal or assist in each of the last four games to help the Flash in the absence of forward and U.S. international Abby Wambach, who has missed the past seven games with a left knee sprain.
Coach Aaran lines will be looking to Losada and Lloyd, who has a team-high six goals this season for Western New York, to lead the line as the Flash will want to take all three points against a team in the bottom three in the standings.
The contest will be the fourth consecutive home game for the Dash, who traveled to face Sky Blue FC on Wednesday but had the match postponed due to weather.
Following paperwork, call-ups, injuries and now lightning have pushed Klingenberg's debut to Saturday against the Flash. Klingenberg expected to make her long-awaited Dash debut in New Jersey but the weather had other ideas.
Starting with the game against Western New York, Houston play three of their next four games at home – where they are just 1-6-0 this season.
The one victory, however, came against the Flash in the previous meeting between the two teams at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The match Saturday is the third and final game between the clubs this season. The Dash won the two earlier meetings this season – both 2-1 victories.
McCarty has scored in each of the games against Western New York and coach Randy Waldrum will be looking for a repeat performance as looks to close the gap on the teams chasing the fourth and final spot in the NWSL Playoffs.
